  • The World Map produced by Gyu-Nam is a Western-style map of the world. The first Western-style world map introduced to Korea was Mateo Ricci's 「坤與萬國全圖」, which was handed down in 1603. After that, Jeong Doo-won, who went to China as an envoy in 1631, obtained 『Jikbang-Oi-Gi(職方外紀)』 and 「The World Map」 written by Alleni. At the top of Master Kyu-Nam's World Map, the title <Taeseohoesaimadu Mangukjeondo (泰西會士利瑪竇萬國全圖)> is written. Imadu is the Chinese name for Matteorich, and it seems that you thought it was drawn from the map of Imadu. However, in reality, it seems to have been drawn based on the World Map published in 『Jikbang Oegi』 by missionary Aleni (艾儒略, Giulio Aleni, 1582-1649) in 1623. Drawing a world map can be said to be a very important cultural task that reflects the human spirit in that it contains the will to establish one's place in the world at a time when the shape of the world was not well understood.
